Barrier-free travel in the Hessian state capital: Wiesbaden for everyone
The Hessian state capital welcomes all travelers - and increasingly barrier-free. In recent years, the city has made noticeable progress in the area of accessibility, setting a strong example for inclusive tourism.
A particularly positive sign is the growing number of tourism businesses that have been certified under the nationally recognized "Reisen für alle" certification system. Six partners in Wiesbaden obtained "Reisen für alle" certification in 2025, bringing the total number of certified partners to eight. Additional businesses have expressed interest in certification. This development builds trust, simplifies travel planning, and makes Wiesbaden an attractive destination for people with disabilities, seniors, and families.
Accessibility is also consistently taken into account in public spaces. City Management Wiesbaden, together with the city’s Inclusion Officer and Wiesbaden Congress & Marketing GmbH, has developed and published a downtown map with accessibility information. The map offers a helpful overview of important details, such as street gradients, public and accessible restrooms, tactile maps, accessible parking spaces, and accessible dining options. It also includes information on sights, cultural institutions, and other tourist destinations, which helps both visitors and locals navigate the city center independently.
As another milestone on the path to greater accessibility, City Management introduced the “Quiet Hour” concept in retail stores in July 2025. Every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m., participating stores deliberately reduce stimuli such as loud music, bright lights, or constant acoustic signals. This flood of stimuli can be particularly challenging for people with sensory sensitivities, such as those with autism, ADHD, migraines, or long COVID. A deliberately low-stimulus environment makes it easier for them to access the city center while also creating a more pleasant shopping atmosphere for all visitors.
With these positive developments, Wiesbaden demonstrates that accessibility is not an afterthought but an essential component of a livable, open city—ensuring that everyone feels welcome, whether with or without a disability.
