The Walkmühle in northeast Wiesbaden has had an impressive history. The highlight of its journey so far: Today, the site is the state capital’s most exciting creative hub. The road to this point was not an easy one; in the 1980s, Wiesbaden artists moved into what was then a dilapidated industrial wasteland and managed to win the city’s support for their ideas.
Today, the Walkmühle Artists’ Association organizes exhibitions, readings, and workshops here and rents out twelve studio spaces. “
Many buildings, such as the brewery and the brewhouse, still evoke the era when beer was brewed at the Walkmühle. The structures have undergone extensive renovation in recent years. As a result, the site has gained so much charm that restaurants and winemakers have also discovered the Walkmühle for themselves. The Vinotto wine bar has set up shop in an atmospheric vaulted cellar; here, you can enjoy delicious antipasti with your wine, and when the weather is nice, you can also sit outside on the terrace. And just a few meters away, twins Jan and David Schäfer run their wine and sparkling wine production facility, hurra. Using grapes from their vineyard in Oestrich-Winkel, the two produce not only sparkling wine but also hopped wines.
Highly recommended: the “hurra Sundays” featuring wine, sparkling wine, and tarte flambée.
The Walkmühle is a unique place for Wiesbaden," says Wulf Winckelmann, who is chairman of the association and has been involved in the transformation of the area from the very beginning. "There are many exhibition venues in the city, but this juxtaposition of free art and the creative scene is something unique here".
The most beautiful path from the center of Wiesbaden up to the Walkmühle leads through the Dürer complex. Opened over 100 years ago, the landscaped park with streams and small ponds stretches like a pointed wedge along the Walkmühle valley up to the old boiler house. So if you want to combine art, pleasure and a walk in the countryside, the Walkmühle is the perfect destination.
